“How’d it go with Vincent?” Fallon asks the next morning.
I glance up from my toasted seed bar. “Huh?”
“You called me and told me you were going to Vincent’s place. Don’t you remember?”
“Oh…” No, I don’t remember. I do remember Fallon went to class. I remember we said we would talk when he got home. I remember researching on the internet. The dream of discovering the mushroom patch. Standing in Vincent’s living room after apparently sleepwalking my way there. Arriving home to find Fallon asleep in bed. But I do not remember calling Fallon.
I’m having entire conversations and not even realizing it. What’s worse is that Fallon doesn’t realize it either. “How did I seem when I told you I was going?”
“You seemed fine.” Fallon frowns. “Why?”
I don’t respond and instead think about that for a few seconds. Having conversations, driving around, not remembering details. Vincent’s right, I did sleepwalk quite a bit when I was younger but it wasn’t until I snuck Rachel’s medicinal herbs that the sleepwalking turned into more unusual behavior.
“Anything you want to tell me?” Fallon prompts.
“Do you remember when I was sneaking Rachel’s hallucinogenic herbs?”
“Please tell me you’re not doing that again. Do I need to remind you what happened?”
“No, I’m not. I promise.” I wouldn’t chance it.
Crossing behind me, Fallon opens the blinds and the morning sun pours in. I’m definitely not going to tell him I sleepwalked my way to Vincent’s home last night. Fallon is already worried about me. I don’t need him more so.
A few moments pass while he makes coffee and buttered toast before moving to the table and taking the seat beside me. Idly I sip my own coffee, thinking about ending up at Vincent’s, following sounds into the woods, and of the internet search on Camp Desonk.
That last thought has me grabbing the laptop and opening the lid. My search is still up and paused on an old photo. Moving the cursor, I zoom in and see a group of teenage boys standing with their arms looped around each other. I study each of their faces but it’s been thirty some years since this photo was taken and so it’s hard to tell. But I paused on this photo for a reason.
“I don’t know why we think we can hide things from each other.” It’s a simple statement Fallon makes, not a question, just a statement, and a deafening silence follows.
I move my attention from the laptop and over to Fallon and for a moment I simply look at him. I don’t know why we think we can either.
Reaching across the short distance, he weaves his fingers through mine. “I want to be so much for you. And I am here for you but I won’t watch you fall apart. Not again.”
My heart nearly stops. “What are you saying?”
“I’m saying that we should be beyond this. Why don’t we know everything about each other? What or who is making us keep secrets?”
By “who” he means Vincent.
Outside tires crunch over our gravel yard and I glance over my shoulder to see Detective Uzzo’s old Chevy truck pull in.
